Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease. There is no curative medical treatment of CD, but current treatments are getting increasingly sustainable control of the disease and allow patients to have a better quality of life. However, digestive and extraintestinal complications are possible. The European Crohn's and Colitis Organisation (ECCO) published in 2010 guidelines on the definition, diagnosis and the treatment of CD. To assist clinicians in making treatment decisions, an expert panel of 59 French gastroenterologists with experience in the management of CD met to establish simple and practical algorithms. A method, the Nominal Group technique has been used to achieve this formal consensus. Nine clinical situations were discussed: mild active CD; moderate active CD with and without poor prognosis factors; severe active CD; perianal CD with single fistulae; perianal CD with complex fistulae with or without abscess; complicated CD with abscess; intestinal stricture; post-surgery CD. Two working groups suggested algorithms which were approved by the whole Nominal Group. These algorithms reflect the expert's opinion consensus on CD management. They will be available via an online application: www.algorithmici.com
