This news is based on the following article: Muncke J, Backhaus T, Geueke B, et al. Scientific challenges in the risk assessment of food contact materials. Environ Health Perspect 2017; 125: 095001. doi: 10.1289/EHP644

Comparing regulations in force in Europe and the USA, the authors of this article conclude that none fully ensure that food is free of potentially harmful substances from objects and materials with which it has had contact. Identifying the gaps in risk assessments, they recommend caution and ask the scientific community to think of ways to improve consumer protection.
