Most of our knowledge about the health effects of dioxin comes from studies of the victims of the Seveso disaster summarized in this article reviewing the results of 40 years of epidemiological research that continues today. The authors review the initial data collection, archiving of biological samples, registers, and extensive monitoring programs that made such knowledge possible.
