To detect the presence of pharmaceutical compounds able to modulate nuclear receptor activity in environmental samples, we have developed reporter cell lines that express nuclear receptors and the corresponding luciferase reporter genes. These cell lines make it possible to measure the in vitro and in vivo activity of pharmaceutical compounds, to detect their presence in environmental samples, and to monitor their purification by recombinant nuclear receptors
