Figure. Progress in the molecular genetics of epilepsy has
occurred by molecular geneticists studying selected families that were
carefully characterised by clinical researchers (arrow 1). This in turn
has led to refinements in the understanding of the clinical spectrum of
certain genetic epilepsies (arrow 2). Future research must evaluate these
molecular genetic discoveries in populations defined by genetic epidemiological
studies (arrow 3). Such populations, when carefully clinically characterised,
may also provide clinical material for further molecular discoveries (arrow
4) and allow further refinements to the phenotypic spectrum, initially
defined by studies on special families (arrow 5).
