Hair and hair diseases: an important issue

European Journal of Dermatology. Volume 11, Numéro 4, 285, July - August 2001, Editorial

Summary

Auteur(s) : R. Happle, Dept of Dermatology, University of Marburg, Deutschhausstr. 9, D-35033 Marburg, Germany..

ARTICLE

This issue is devoted to the special field of hair growth and hair diseases. In an authoritative way, internationally renowned experts review the present knowledge and future perspectives, as presented at the Annual Meeting of the European Hair Research Society that was held on September 15-17, 2000, in Marburg, Germany.

The advances of molecular analysis as well as the progress in the treatment of hair loss have opened new avenues of thinking and stimulated new research. In particular, due to the importance of the hair follicle as a model system for various fields of basic research, hair biology has, in the course of the past decades, continuously attracted more scientists.

In this issue, dermatologists and all other readers will find new information on the interaction of androgens and hair growth; on recent advances of comparative trichology by studies of the murine hair cycle; on the embryology of hair and feather formation; on the systemic or topical effects of drugs on the hair follicle; and on the most recent trends in alopecia areata and hair follicle immunology.

Moreover, the Guess What section of this issue is exclusively devoted to hair diseases. In this way, the readers can test their skills in establishing an appropriate diagnosis in difficult cases of hair disorders.

I wish to thank all of the contributors and Rolf Hoffmann (Marburg) for his expert work in compiling this special issue.
