MDS are clonal pluripotent, stem cell disorders characterized by ineffective hematopoiesis resulting in blood cytopenias contrasting with a typically cellular marrow. MDS evolve frequently to acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and are the most frequent preleukemic states in adults.MDS predominate in the elderly, with a median age at diagnosis of about 70 years.
