An 8-year-old boy presented with a depressed plaque on the vertebral region of his middle back since birth. The lesion remained fairly stable and had never ulcerated. Physical examination revealed a depressed, blue-to-black plaque (approximate diameter, 2 cm) surrounded by a red patch (approximate diameter, 5 cm) on his back (figure 1A).
