A 21-year-old man consulted 3 years ago for subcutaneous nodules that had increased in number and size since 11 years. Numerous café-au-lait spots and multiple tender subcutaneous nodules were seen over his whole body (figure 1A). His mother also had numerous café-au-lait spots. The patient complained of numbness in his hands with neck movement. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a cervical spinal tumor at C1-2 (figure 1B).
