INTRODUCTION Many cellular membrane proteins are subjected to limited proteolysis giving rise to soluble forms consisting of the entire extracellular domains of the proteins. This process is referred to as shedding. The field has been reviewed in ref. [1-3]. Importantly, soluble forms of receptors for growth factors and cytokines retain their ability to bind their ligands. Moreover, many cytokines are synthesized as transmembrane precursor [...]
