INTRODUCTION At the onset of acute infection, circulating polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) are stimulated to migrate from the bloodstream by chemoattractant peptides such as f-met-leu-phe (f-MLP) secreted by bacterial pathogens, or by cytokines such as interleukin-8 (IL-8) secreted by epithelial cells.
