INTRODUCTION IL-6 is a pleiotropic cytokine that acts on various target cells [1]. Its receptor is composed of a ligand binding 80 kDa glycoprotein (IL-6R) [2] and a signal transducing 130 kDa glycoprotein (gp130) [3], both of which belong to the haematopoietin receptor superfamily [4].
