Venous thromboembolism is frequent, potentially lethal, and difficult to diagnose and treat in patients with intracerebral haemorrhage. Therefore preventing venous thromboembolism is valuable but problematic; heparin even at a low dose may be deleterious in patients with intracerebral haemorrhage. Mechanical devices are interesting because they do not cause bleeding. It is necessary to evaluate them in this setting. A randomised trial has shown the superiority of intermittent pneumatic compression of the lower limbs associated with elastic stockings over elastic stockings alone. The risk for asymptomatic deep vein thrombosis detected by compression ultrasonography at day 10 was reduced by 71%.
