Endovascular techniques are a great revolution in the care of peripheral artery disease, achieving an improvement in clinical status of the patients, with less perioperative morbimortality. During the follow-up, the sustain of long-term patency is one of the most critical factor. Actually, restenosis is recognized as the principal factor limiting the mid and long-term patency. After the failure of systemic treatment to prevent restenosis, drug-eluting devices (balloons and stents) seem to show the most encouraging results. Drug-eluting balloon is one of the most popular devices at the moment, according to the number of publications dealing with it. In order to understand every part of this device, the purpose of this article is to present the drug-eluting balloon characteristics, principles of action, instruction for use. We also present different devices available on the market, and a review of current literature of drug-eluting balloon outcomes in different localization.
