The weight gain that inevitably follows smoking cessation is a major barrier to withdrawal. Tobacco, and in particular nicotine, induces abnormalities in metabolism and eating behaviour resulting in a lower average weight than in non-smokers. The weight gain caused by smoking cessation is very frequent, but its importance and scope can be reduced by hygienic and dietary measures, in particular by correcting the unhealthy behaviour usually associated with smoking. A special effort must be made to educate the patient, emphasising that the benefits of stopping smoking - in terms of cardiovascular, cancer and respiratory morbidity - outweigh the disadvantages of the weight gain that accompanies it.
