The Atakora mountain range in north western Benin alters the typical West African zonal pattern of decreasing rainfall with latitude. With a unimodal régime, the Atakora region has been undergoing drier conditions due to a decrease in the number of rainy days, a significant decrease in the number of rain storms with quantifies equal to or higher than 40 mm, and a relative increase in light to moderate rainfall. Generally, the rainy season seems to be characterized by a late start and an early end at all stations except Bembérékè.
