The establishment of alfa grass largely depends on the rainfall and on its seasonal distribution. Dry years are marked by a low density of species in between the clumps of Stipa tenacissima L. The regeneration and establishment of the vegetation in the alfa steppes seem to be made possible by spreading the litter recovered from the clumps themselves over the bare surface in between the tufts. A quantitative spatio‐temporal study of the vegetation between the clumps of Stipa tenacissima L. shows a noticeable increase in the plant density under a mulch litter. This increase remains nevertheless dependent on climatic conditions even though soil evaporation decreases as a result of mulching.
