For many Mediterranean countries, karst aquifers offer an essential, even unique water resource. We cover both the characteristics and specificities of Mediterranean karsts. Such karsts are determined by a particular climate and, in general, recent complex geological history marked by the Messinian crisis of salinity. The consequences are analysed in order to highlight the absolute necessity for improving knowledge on karst aquifers and regional hydrogeology and setting up permanent monitoring devices for efficient and sustainable management and protection of these groundwater resources.
