The argan woodlands of Southwest Morocco have over the last few decades undergone an important decline, the extent and causes of which remain insufficiently known. This paper measures the tree density decrease in the Eastern part of the argan woodlands and analyses its causes and its long-term links with local development. It demonstrates the importance of taking into account the multiplicity of factors of ecological and social changes so as to inform decision-making.
