Until 1970, drinking water supplies for the Dakar region were drawn from the water table. However, because of the population boom in the region, this water source can no longer address the needs of the capital. In 1970, the Senegalese Government, through SONEES, decided to try to solve this problem by tapping the Lake Guiers water supply. Unfortunately, this did not entirely overcome the Dakar water deficit. The Government is therefore now looking for other solutions, including construction of the Cayor canal.
