Work territories and identity issues among Quebec home care workers in Local Service Community Centres

Sciences Sociales et Santé. Volume 20, Number 3, 37, Septembre 2002, Articles

Résumé

Author(s) : Marguerite Cognet

Summary : The rapid transformation of the Quebec health care system during the last decade of the xxth century has produced a reorganisation of professions in that some existing professional groups were forced to redefine their areas of expertise while others emerged as newcomers on the front scene. The latter is the case of home care workers. However, little value is attached to their work and not much is known about it. As a professional group they seem to have difficulty in fully affirming themselves. The sentiment of belonging to a professional order is discouraged by the diverse types of training and found among members of this group. An analysis of intervention practices and work relationships indicates that gender and ethnic identities serve as substitutes over that of a professional identity when women, immigrants (and in particular immigrants of colour) compose the dominant group profile. Above all, professional recognition occurs by the way in which home care workers invest in and use their work territories.
