Summary : Prolonged fever of unknown origin continues to pose diagnostic and therapeutic problems. Infectious diseases are the main etiology, with one-third of case being due to tuberculosis\; cancer and inflammatory conditions are other major causes. The initial work-up should include bacteriological tests, ENT and dental examinations, and an abdominal CT scan which provides the diagnosis in 28% of cases. Therapeutic tests with anti-tuberculosis drugs, nonsteroidal antiinflammatory agents and steroids are useful when paraclinical tests are negative. |
