Urban malaria and placental infection in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso

Cahiers d'études et de recherches francophones / Santé . Volume 2, Number 3, 176-9, Mai-Juin 1992, Étude originale

Résumé   Summary

Author(s) : Jean-François Molez, Marie-France Bosseno, Germain Traore, Pierre Carnevale, Pierre Gazin, ORS-TOM/OCCGE, Centre Muraz, BP 171, Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, Hôpital Souro Sanou, service de maternité-obstétrique, Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, ORSTOM/OCEAC, BP 288, Yaoundé, Cameroun..

Summary : Placental infection by Plasmodium was studied in Bobo-Dioulasso (Burkina Faso) during two years from July to December. 342 pregnant women were included in the survey. Only P. falciparum was observed. The prevalence rate of placental infection was 14%. This rate was higher in November and December (24%) than during the four months before (11%). It was also significatively higher by the women living near the little river of the city than by the women living in the other quarters of the city. Placental infection appeared to be an indicator of the malarial situation much more sensitive than the classic parasitological indexes in the children.
