Chronic pancreatitis in French-speaking West Africa

Cahiers d'études et de recherches francophones / Santé . Volume 2, Number 1, 35-9, Janvier-Février 1992, Étude originale

Résumé   Article gratuit

Author(s) : Francis Klotz, Jean-Marc Debonne, Pierre Aubry

Summary : We report the results of a survey concerning the distribution and pathogenesis of chronic pancreatitis in French-speaking West Africa. The data show that the frequency of chronic calcifying pancreatitis (CCP) is low in West Africa. CCP is diagnosed on the basis of the hallmarks of chronic pancreatitis (abdominal pain, wasting and greasy stools), or sugar diabetes, with X-ray confirmation on the unprepared abdomen. Alcohol consumption was the main etiology, followed by juvenile tropical pancreatitis\; few cases were associated with malnutrition.
