Clinical and epidemiological survey of Buruli ulcers in young people in Bénin

Summary : The authors report the results of a clinical, bacteriological and therapeutic study of 74 Bénin children and teenagers with Mycobacterium ulcerans skin lesions. Most (77%) of the patients had stage 3 ulceration. Acid-fast bacilli were isolated from 37 of 45 patients tested. Medical treatment (antituberculosis and antileprosis drugs) is often disappointing, and mutilating surgery is often unavoidable. When necessary, excision and repeated skin grafting gives good results in 50-75% of patients.
