Summary : The aim of this study was to compare the therapeutic efficacy of a manufactured yogurt with living flora versus that of a home-made high-energy fermented milk (soow) in malnourished children with acute diarrhoea. Fifty breast-fed children with acute diarrhoea and malnutrition (weight for height below 80% of NCHS standard) were enrolled in this study from November 1988 to July 1989\; allocation between the two groups (soow vs yogurt) was random and the groups were comparable. The clinical results showed that the two products were well tolerated and had comparable efficacy for the nutritional rehabilitation of these children. Mean weight gain was 16 g/kg/d and no children had to be withdrawn because of weight loss or worsening diarrhoea. The biological results confirmed the usefulness of transthyretin determination coupled with that of acute-phase proteins to evaluate and monitor nutritional deficit. These findings suggest that early nutritional rehabilitation with high-energy fermented milk, together with oral rehydratation, is effective in malnourished children with acute diarrhoea. |
