Summary : The upsurge of food poisoning by endosulfan in the zone of Tchaourou led the health authorities to set up a surveillance system to ensure reporting and management of all cases. The objective of this study is to assess the reporting system and to promote community involvement in the management of these cases of food poisoning by pesticides. The principal components of this system are a new monitoring system, organization of management, investigation of the cases, and community education. From may 2007 through july 2008, 105 cases were reported and nine deaths (for a lethality rate of 9%). Measures suggested to reduce endosulfan poisoning in food include, in the intermediate term, provision of adequate preservatives by the authorities responsible for agricultural development and the adoption of laws regulating endosulfan sale and, in the long term, the creation of grain banks, where each peasant who produces excess grain will be able to deposit it. |
