Sleep is a physiological state during which the responsiveness to external stimuli is decreased. However, numerous studies indicate that information processing during sleep is not totally abolished. This mini-review aims first at illustrating some of the cognitive processes occurring during sleep. We will then expose how sleep-dependent memory consolidation proceeds according to the hippocampo-neocortical dialogue and synaptic downscaling models. We will finally show how perceptive capacities (perception of odors and sounds) during sleep stages can be used to boost memory consolidation.
