After the smallpox eradication in 1980, the analysis of this first worldwide success allowed to establish the conditions of a possible eradication. Several diseases preventable through immunisation have a plan of eradication from WHO, namely poliomyelitis in 1988, measles in 2001 and congenital rubella syndrome in 2012. In spite of an important international support, technical, operational and political obstacles refrain and delay the objectives of eradication. Only four of the six regions of the world of WHO have successfully eliminated poliomyelitis, and only one has eliminated measles and congenital rubella syndrome. The objectives of eradication are postponed until 2020 and remain a real challenge for public health.
