In women and mammals, there are two reserves of follicles in the ovaries, the “static” reserve of primordial follicles, and the “dynamic” reserve of growing antral follicles. One knows numerous genes involved in the formation of the static reserve and in the recruitment of primordial follicles, mutations of which altering these two reserves. The dynamic reserve, visible by ultrasound, can be estimated by AMH blood levels, given the strong correlation that exists between them and the number of growing antral follicles that secrete it. There are also two relationships between these two reserves. On the one hand AMH is likely to block the recruitment of primordial follicles, which allows a management of the primordial follicle pool by growing follicles. On the other hand, there is also a positive correlation between the number of primordial follicles and the number of growing follicles in the female but also the cow and the mouse.
