We developped an index to measure the antral follicle responsiveness to follicle-stimulating hormone administration. The Follicular Output RaTe (FORT) is assessed by the ratio between the number of preovulatory follicles obtained in response to FSH administration and the preexisting pool of small antral follicles. We used this interesting clinical model to show in vivo the negative correlation between anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) and follicular responsiveness to FSH. We also showed that antral follicle responsiveness to FSH, measured objectively by the FORT, is not influenced by the presence of SNPs of FSHR Thr307Ala and Asn680Ser when strong doses of exogenous FSH are administred. Finally we found a relationship between the percentage of antral follicles that effectively respond to FSH administration by reaching preovulatory maturation and IVF-ET outcome. This result may indicate that FORT is a qualitative reflector of ovarian follicular competence.
