Summary : The association between cancer and venous thromboembolism is well known. The development of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in a patient with known cancer is the most common presentation. In some cases, VTE may precede the diagnosis of malignancy by many months. Screening for occult malignancy when VTE is diagnosed is a common strategy to reduce cancer related mortality. Two strategies were evaluated: the first was routine testing for malignant disease, including a clinical history, a thorough physical examination and laboratory testing. The second strategy was extensive and systematic screening. Although the second strategy detected more cancers at an earlier stage, the prognosis was the same. |
