Summary : Scuba diving is associated with a risk of decompression sickness, secondary to the formation of intravascular nitrogen bubbles during ascent. The presence of a right to left shunt may facilitate shunting of venous bubbles to the arterial side and their paradoxical embolization, particularly to the central nervous system and the inner ear. The assessment of the responsibility of a patent foramen oval (PFO) remains difficult and it is considered basically to be a risk factor for decompression sickness. Various procedures have been proposed to reduce this risk in divers with a PFO, mainly as a secondary prevention. |
