New aspects of measuring body composition

Sang Thrombose Vaisseaux. Volume 21, Number 5, 232-9, mai-juin 2009, Mini-revue

Résumé   Article gratuit

Author(s) : Célia Lloret-Linares, Jean-Michel Oppert

Summary : The determination of human body composition is a major step in nutritional assessment. The assessment of body compartments (simplified as a 2 compartment-model including fat mass and fat-free mass or lean body mass) allows better understanding of the pathophysiology of various disease conditions, to follow their evolution and to guide treatment approaches. In clinical practice, anthropometric methods and bioelectrical impedance are the easiest to use. However, their limitations are important especially for assessment of body composition at individual level. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) is increasingly considered as a reference method. New methods such as air displacement plethysmography need further validation, especially in obese individuals. Assessment of specific adipose depots, such as abdominal visceral fat, relies on imaging techniques (tomodensitometry or MRI). In the clinical setting, measuring waist circumference remains the most useful tool to assess abdominal adiposity.

Keywords : body composition, nutrition, bioimpedance, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, densitometry
