Cardiovascular consequences of low birth weight

Sang Thrombose Vaisseaux. Volume 20, Number 5, 239-44, mai 2008, Mini-revue

Résumé   Article gratuit

Author(s) : Taly Meas, Claire Levy-Marchal

Summary : For many years, epidemiological data have shown a relationship between cardiovascular diseases in adulthood and a history of low birth weight. The term « small for gestational age » (SGA) describes a neonate whose birth weight or length is 2 standard deviations below the mean, for the newborn’s gestational age, based on data derived from a reference population, or with a birth weight or length below the 10th percentile. Low birth weight is also associated with a very high risk of developing hypertension, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. The association with an atherogenic lipid profile is less clear. Therefore, all the components of the metabolic syndrome’s have been shown to be associated with the SGA phenotype. These data also raised the pathogenic role of catch-up growth following growth retardation during in utero life. Although the biological mechanisms underlying this association are still unknown, different explanatory hypotheses have been proposed. Animal models are an invaluable tool for investigating these questions.

Keywords : low birth weight, cardiovascular mortality
