Summary : The association between hereditary thrombophilia and foetal loss is progressively being confirmed: animal murine models showing that the protein C system is essential for the maintenance of pregnancy\; human data showing that the placenta replaces the yolk sac as an essential source of blood supply to the embryo during the 8
th and 9
th weeks\; epidemiological data allowing meta-analysis linking frequent thrombophilic polymorphisms, like the factor V Leiden and prothrombin 20210G>A mutations, to isolated or recurrent foetal losses\; therapeutic non-controlled trials describing the benefits and safety of low molecular weight heparins used in secondary prophylaxis. It is still necessary to clarify this association, mainly during the first pregnancy, with respect to the type of pregnancy loss and the associated cofactors. |
