Summary : Lipedema is an accumulation of fat tissue in lower limbs with an abnormal distribution from hips to the ankles, which is observed more frequently in obese women. Pathophysiologic mechanisms are unclear. Diagnosis is based on clinical findings and lipedema does not usually require additional investigations. However lymphoscintigraphy may be useful for the main differential diagnosis, primary lymphedema of lower limbs. Psychological morbidity is often important and these women are in strong demand for treatment. Treatment is difficult because weight loss cannot modify the morphology of lower limbs. Surgery (liposuction, cutaneous reduction) may be a useful tool in lipedema. |
