Summary : Neurological complications of cardiac surgery are relatively common, associated with increased mortality, length of hospitalisation, and with psychomotor and/or neuropsychological disturbances. Cardiac surgery is performed in relatively elderly patients often with an underlying atherosclerotic disease, in whom hemodynamic fluctuations, cerebral embolization of atherosclerotic plaque, air, fat and platelet aggregates may have deleterious consequences. Neurological complications mainly involve the brain : strokes, encephalopathies with neuropsychological disturbances. Progress in surgical and anaesthetic procedures, identification of high-risk patients and better understanding of brain lesion pathophysiology would help reduce the decrease cerebral consequences of cardiac surgery. |
