Summary : The syndrome of the “economy class” was widely publicised in 1988 with the report of 5 cases of venous thromboembolism after travelling by air, but this problem is not just anecdotal. Many cases have been reported since then. All types of transport for travels lasting several hours are involved. The physiopathology of venous thrombosis of the traveller is an “experimental model” of stasis. This probably explains why this type of thrombosis occurs without any other associated pathological factor. As they are often asymptomatic initially, it is possible that the prevalence has been significantly underestimated. Simple preventive measures are recommended while more accurate epidemiological data concerning venous thrombosis complicating travel is gathered. |
