Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis

Neurologie.com. Volume 2, Number 7, 176-8, septembre 2010, Revue flash

Résumé   Article gratuit

Author(s) : Jérôme de Seze

Summary : Acute demyelinating encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is an inflammatory disease of central nervous system (CNS) more frequently observed in children or young adults. The clinical symptoms frequently occur after a vaccinal or infectious episode and include encephalopathy with consciousness or behavior disturbances. Differential diagnosis with multiple sclerosis (MS) is sometimes without follow-up period. However, grey matter involvement or absence of corpus callosum lesion on MRI in one side and absence of oligoclonal bands on the other side allow in many cases the differentiation between the 2 diseases.

Keywords : encephalomyelitis, ADEM, multiple sclerosis, MRI, CSF
