Unreasonable obduracy and withdrawing of care in paediatric intensive care unit : talking about three recent examples

Médecine thérapeutique / Pédiatrie. Volume 15, Number 1, 17-23, Janvier-Février-Mars 2012, Dossier

Résumé   Texte intégral

Author(s) : Sophie Aizenfisz, Stéphane Dauger

Summary : We report three cases observed recently in pediatric intensive care unit and presented during the last Paliped meeting dedicated to the Leonetti law's specificities in paediatrics. Although those three situations led to propose to forgo life sustaining treatment after a multidisciplinary meeting, the relatives did not agree and expressed great difficulties to accept this decision of withholding or withdrawal of life saving treatments. Based on recent literature and directives of the law edicted in April 2005, we propose some suggestion concerning the way to manage those difficult situations, which could have been more frequent in pediatric intensive care unit during last years.

Keywords : infant, child, ethic, case report
