Summary : Embryo donation in France is controlled by implemented decrees published between 1999 and 2004. The first centres introduced this technique in 2002, but an assessment performed five years later reveals that only 8 centres actually proposed it to the couples. Why is this activity, technically easy and efficient in fact, no more spread throughout the French ART centres ? The practical details of the donation procedure determined by law are heavy and require an important investment in terms of personnel and time. Some ART centres appear reluctant to do embryo donation according also to ethical reasons. The other main problem is the weak number of couples who agree to donate their embryos to another couple [about 10 %]. This situation could be link to the mental perception they have of their embryos considered as potential children. This could explain the great number of couples who cannot decide on the faith of their embryos and who fail to answer to the ART team. More dialogue between the ART team and the couples could be a good way to help them in their choice. This situation leads us to think about our practice and specifically on supernumerary embryo cryopreservation : perhaps we generate more problem than we solve ? |
