Contraception of the adolescent

Médecine. Volume 8, Number 3, 112-7, Mars 2012, Stratégies

Résumé   Article gratuit

Author(s) : Pierre Gallois, Jean-Pierre Vallée, Yves Le Noc

Summary : The sexual practices of the French young people have changed, as in neighboring European countries. Contraception has become the “norm”, with condoms during the first intercourse, followed by oral contraception. The need for confidentiality and free contraceptives causes practical problems which are still unsolved in France, although some experiments have shown that this is possible. The condom is now the best tool for the prevention of STDs, which leads to a reinforcement of the medical advice, especially at the beginning of sexual life. Its contraceptive efficacy, in “real life”, is not very different from that of the estrogen-progestogen pill. It seems appropriate to advise the association of both in the beginnings of an active sexual life, to avoid the persistence of many failures of contraception, with a stable and high rate of abortions in very young women. Among the obstacles to effective contraceptive use in adolescence, we find the necessity of prior medical consultation. The objective of quality and safety of contraception is related to observing basic relational exchanges which must be specifically adapted to this age: biomedical analysis is rarely the urgency of the moment. There is no “treatment” to “cure” acne. If the contraception is adapted, and necessary, it may be sufficient to control discreet inflammatory acne and, in combination with other anti-acne preparations, to help in the control of more important acne.
