Summary : Families with sickle cell disease gradually incorporate new medical knowledge without abandoning their beliefs: the culture of origin is less important than the experience of illness. The socialization process engaged before coming to France is accelerating and professionals should be aware: medical intrusion into the private sphere is not so easy. Like all diseases, sickle cell anemia is also a social phenomenon built by physicians, geneticists, public authorities, patients' relatives, and educational staff on both sides of the frontier. The behaviours of immigrant populations are plural, related to socialization in childhood and to types of migration and integration, to the levels of study, socioeconomic backgrounds, types of professional activity and religious affiliations.
