Sickle cell anemia, a disease to rediscover. Part one: what position for the caregivers?

Médecine. Volume 7, Number 10, 478-81, Décembre 2011, Vie professionnelle

Résumé   Texte intégral

Author(s) : Anne Vega

Summary : Surveys of families from Africa show wide variations of experience in sickle cell anemia, according to the societies they belong to, their family ideals, but also their past experiences. This explains the importance for professionals to gather the experience of the disease, distrusting their own representations of the “other”. Without denying the impact of cultural references, the anthropologist shows that the behavior of families with sickle cell disease are more related to a multitude of social and individual factors. We will see in a future article that these practices and strategies are far from finalized.

Keywords : anemia, sickle cell\; health resources\; family health\; stigmatization
