Summary : There is no evidence for clinically relevant effects of the four drugs marketed for the symptomatic treatment of Alzheimer's disease (donepezil, galantamine, rivastigmine and memantine): neither for the criteria for major decisions such as delayed entry into the institution, quality of life, assistance to caregivers, nor for mortality, even among subgroups of responders. Their adverse effects can be serious, sometimes fatal, aggravated by the very frequent comorbidities and high risk of drug interactions. This requires additional monitoring and medical examinations and in no way relieves the major public health burden that is Alzheimer's disease. Even in the absence of alternative medication, the medical benefit of these drugs is at best inadequate.
