Ventricular tachycardia in the setting of underlying heart disease |

Summary : Ventricular Tachycardia (VT) may happen in both young and elderly patients, and either in the presence or the absence of structural heart disease. VT may originate from both ventricles, however, left-sided VT in the setting of ischemic cardiomyopathy represent the vast majority of them. Prognosis is dependant to the presence of an underlying structural heart disease and is inversely correlated to the left ventricular dysfunction. Careful medical therapy and/or a more “aggressive” option, such as anti-tachycardia device implantation, are the gold standard treatments in the presence of a cardiomyopathy. In this setting, VT may frequently degenerate to ventricular fibrillation especially in patients with low ejection fraction, while this risk is exceptional in the absence of heart disease. |
