Summary : Several cardiovascular risk factors have been identified, which can be modified by non-pharmacological approaches, as well as by medications. They constitute therapeutic targets for which objectives to reach must be defined, by means of appropriate therapeutic strategies. The distinction between primary and secondary prevention is gradually disappearing. Secondary prevention patients require the same therapeutic tools, with the same objectives, as high-risk primary prevention subjects. In all cases, lifestyle modifications should be explained and encouraged. Then, depending on their risk profile and comorbidities, patients should be given medications that have been proven to improve cardiovascular outcomes: antihypertensive, lipid-lowering, antidiabetic and/or antithrombotic drugs. This paper summarizes the most recent recommendations regarding primary and secondary prevention of the main three cardiovascular diseases of atheromatous origin: coronary disease, cerebrovascular disease and peripheral arterial disease. |
