MRI of congenital heart diseases

MT Cardio. Volume 3, Number 2, 85-92, Mars-Avril 2007, Dossier – Cardiopathies congénitales

Résumé   Article gratuit

Author(s) : Phalla Ou, Arshid Azarine, Francis Brunelle, Daniel Sidi, Damien Bonnet

Summary : Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an expanding modality for the evaluation of congenital heart disease, providing both anatomic and functional evaluation. Although MRI is performed routinely in young adults, it is more difficult in daily practice in infants because of the complexity of protocols and the length of the examination. In this latter situation, high resolution computed tomography is an excellent alternate non-invasive modality, with, however, the disadvantage of ionization and injection of a contrast agent. Thus, the use of MRI in paediatric cardiology has to include a rationalization of the available resources of imaging exploiting their complementarities according both to indications and to patient rather than their domain of overlapping, in order to optimize appropriately management of congenital heart diseases at all ages.

Keywords : MRI, coronary artery, venous return, atrial septal defect
