Summary : The population in which the prevalence of high blood pressure and its consequences are steadily rising is the elderly. They are facing a worse protection against this cardiovascular risk due to their status on the one hand and due to their specific sensitivity to medical treatment. The decrease of cardiovascular events is explained by this very treatment, always bearing in mind the avoidance of always threatening side effects, but it is also closely related to sound life style, keeping in mind a wise analysis when reaching 80 years old. Systolic, diastolic but also pulse pressure are important. Body fragility, addition of other diseases and acute responses to environmental triggers, require safety measures if this treatment is to be given properly. Orthostatic hypotension, which is often the result of an ill-fated combination and sometimes of bad management, is a frequent trap physicians must bear in mind. Hence, observance issues hamper the management the doctor has to drive the proper way, whose task is to protect this elderly population which is exposed to a higher cardiovascular risk. |
